New hardwood floor installed in a Charlotte kitchen
Hardwood & engineered

Is it right for your home?

Best for

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and open main floors
  • Homes you plan to keep: solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished for decades
  • Matching or extending existing oak floors (red or white oak)
  • Buyers who want real wood with a wide-plank, modern look (engineered)

Good to know

  • Wood reacts to humidity, so we meter wood and subfloor moisture before install
  • Solid hardwood is nailed down on wood subfloors; engineered can also float or glue over concrete
  • New wood needs time on site to acclimate before it goes down
  • Not the right choice for full bathrooms or laundry rooms. We will suggest LVP or tile there

Patterns we install

Laid board by board on site, in solid or engineered oak and most exotic species.

Herringbone

Rectangular boards meet at right angles in a zigzag. Classic in entries, dining rooms and studies.

Chevron

Boards cut at an angle so the ends meet in a clean point, forming a continuous V.

Diagonal

Straight boards laid at 45°. Makes a small room feel wider and hides an out-of-square wall.

Mixed-width plank

Two or three widths of oak in one floor for a hand-built, farmhouse look.

Exotic species, wide widths and patterns are special order. We confirm availability, lead time and price at your free in-home visit.

Moisture & subfloor

What we check before the first board goes down.

Moisture meter reading on a hardwood board

Moisture readings

We meter the wood and the subfloor. Wood installed too wet or too dry will gap or cup later.

Stacked hardwood acclimating inside a home before installation

Acclimation

New wood rests inside your home before installation so it adjusts to your air.

Plywood subfloor installed over a concrete slab in a foyer next to a staircase

Solid hardwood over concrete

On a slab we install a plywood subfloor first, then nail solid hardwood on top. This foyer later received solid Brazilian cherry.

Subfloor damage found during a flooring job

Hidden damage

If we uncover a damaged subfloor, we stop, show you, and get your approval before any added cost.

FAQ

Questions about hardwood & engineered.

Solid or engineered: which is better?

Solid hardwood can be sanded many times and is ideal over wood subfloors. Engineered is more stable in changing humidity, comes in wider planks and can go over concrete. We will recommend one after seeing your home.

Can you match my existing oak floors?

Usually yes. We match species and width, weave new boards into the old ones where needed, then sand and finish everything together so it reads as one floor.

How long does a hardwood installation take?

Most rooms take a few days; a full main floor usually about a week. Site-finished floors need extra time for stain and finish coats. Your proposal includes the schedule.

Do you remove the old flooring?

Yes. Carpet, glue-down and old floor removal can be included in your proposal, along with furniture moving.

What widths of red and white oak do you install?

We install solid red and white oak from 1-1/2" strip up to 10" wide plank. Narrow widths match older Charlotte homes; wide planks give a modern look. Wider boards are made to order, so we confirm lead time at your visit.

Do you install exotic hardwood and herringbone or chevron floors?

Yes. We install exotic species such as Brazilian cherry, Brazilian walnut (ipe), Brazilian teak and tigerwood, and lay herringbone, chevron and diagonal patterns on site. These are special order; we bring samples and confirm price and timing at your free estimate.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, on larger projects. Ask us at your free in-home estimate and we will walk you through the financing options available.
